What Happens During an ABA Assessment?

For many families, the first step in beginning Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy is completing an ABA assessment. It's normal to feel unsure about what this process involves, but an assessment is simply an opportunity for a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) to get to know your child and your family. The goal is to understand your child's strengths, challenges, interests, and daily routines so that therapy can be tailored to meet their unique needs. Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, ABA assessments are designed to create an individualized plan that supports meaningful progress.

During the assessment, the BCBA will gather information in several ways. This often includes interviewing parents or caregivers, reviewing medical or educational records when available, and observing your child's communication, play, social interactions, learning style, and behavior. Depending on your child's age and abilities, the BCBA may use standardized assessment tools, structured activities, or natural play-based observations to evaluate current skills. Families are encouraged to share their concerns, priorities, and goals throughout the process, as their input is essential in developing a treatment plan that reflects what matters most at home and in everyday life.

After the assessment is complete, the BCBA analyzes the information collected to develop a personalized treatment plan. This plan outlines measurable goals that focus on areas such as communication, social skills, daily living skills, emotional regulation, play, safety awareness, and independence. If challenging behaviors are present, the BCBA may also conduct or recommend a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) to better understand why those behaviors occur and identify positive, evidence-based strategies to address them. The treatment plan is then reviewed with the family, giving parents the opportunity to ask questions and collaborate before services begin.
